Nutrition Myths Debunked: What Science Really Says
Welcome to the internet, where everyone is a nutrition expert—especially your Aunt Millie on Facebook who once read half an article about kale. Today, we’re going to take a cold, hard look at some of the most persistent #nutrition #myths. Spoiler: science is not impressed.
Myth 1: Carbs Are the Enemy
Carbs—the #Voldemort of the food world. If you eat a slice of bread, you might as well just tape it to your thighs, right? #Science disagrees. #Carbohydrates are actually your body’s preferred #energy source, especially for your brain. The real villain? Refined carbs and sugary snacks, cue the deep echo... SUGAR...SUGAR... #SUGAR... , not the humble #potato....did you hear the harp music? Is that the sun???☀️ So, yes, you can eat that banana without writing a will.
Myth 2: Fat Makes You Fat
If eating fat made you fat, then eating money would make you rich.🤑 Sadly, neither is true. I almost died swallowing a quarter in the 2nd grade...defiantly not worth it! Healthy #fats—think avocados, nuts, olive oil—are essential for your body to function. Weight gain happens when you eat more calories than you burn, not because you dared to drizzle olive oil on your salad. But sure, blame the guacamole. The avocado deserves it....but that's just me, my husband adores them!
Myth 3: All Calories Are Equal
A #calorie is a calorie, just like a #diamond is the same as a cubic zirconia. Technically true, but also completely missing the point. “Empty calories” from junk food offer little more than a sugar rush and existential regret, while nutrient-dense foods actually do something for your body. But hey, you do you. Sometimes you NEED a sleeve of thin mints to get through night when your binge watching true crime docs on #Hulu...
Myth 4: Eating Late at Night Leads to Weight Gain
If eating after 8 p.m. caused weight gain, every #nightshift worker would be a #cautionarytale. The truth: it’s the total calories you eat, NOT the time you eat them, that matters. So go ahead, have that #midnightsnack. Just don’t blame the clock for your third slice of cake. Timing becomes more important when you have issues with #bloodsugar and hormone regulation issues or #reflux... I have to go to bed on an empty stomach or it can all come back up, and out my nose in the middle of the night... Have you ever had vomit come out of your nose??? I don't recommend it, definitely two thumbs down!👎
Myth 5: Skipping Meals Helps You Lose Weight
Skipping meals is a great way to slow your #metabolism and end up inhaling an entire pizza at 9 p.m. Science says regular, balanced meals are better for energy and #appetitecontrol. But if you enjoy being hangry, by all means, skip breakfast. I'm not trying to pick a fight with the intermitting #fasting folks, I'm just saying it's not the only way. Especially if it's a struggle. That means, it's probably not a good plan for your body.
Myth 6: Egg Yolks Will Kill You, Or Something Like That..
Egg yolks: once the dietary equivalent of a loaded gun, or pack of cigarettes (one vegan told me) Turns out, dietary #cholesterol has minimal impact on blood cholesterol for #most people. Eggs are actually #nutrientrich. So unless you’re #allergic, you can stop treating yolks like biohazards. Did you hear the harp music again??
Myth 7: You Need Meat to Get Enough Protein
("What do you mean you don't eat no meat??? That's okay, I'll make lamb")
If you don’t eat #meat, you’ll waste away into a protein-deficient husk. Or, you know, you could eat #tofu, #beans, #lentils, #nuts, and whole grains and be just fine. But sure, keep clutching that steak. Lots of people all over the world live a healthy, meat free life. Not everyone can. #Diet is very #individual and based mainly on your #genetics. Utilize the resources that are available these days to find what is best for you specifically.
Myth 8: Fresh Produce Is Always Healthier Than Frozen or Canned
If you’ve ever thrown out a bag of wilted spinach, you know the pain. Good news: frozen and canned fruits and veggies can be just as nutritious as fresh,(gasp!🫢) sometimes even more so, since they’re picked and packed at peak ripeness. So you can stop feeling guilty about your freezer full of peas. If you are eating vegetables, congratulations! That's AWESOME!
One diet should work for everyone, Aunt Edna said so…
When it comes to diet, the idea that “one size fits all” is about as #outdated as low-fat #margarine. In reality, what works wonders for one person might do absolutely nothing—or even backfire—for someone else, and a big part of that comes down to #genetics. Our genes influence everything from how we metabolize fats and carbs to how we process vitamins, and even what foods we crave or can’t stand. For example, certain genetic variants can make you more sensitive to caffeine, more likely to gain weight on a high-fat diet, or require more #folate than the average person. This is why personalized nutrition, which tailors dietary advice to your unique genetic profile, is gaining traction and leaving generic diet plans in the dust. So, before you swear allegiance to your friend’s miracle diet, remember: your #DNA might have other plans.
Final Thoughts
Nutrition #myths are like that one friend who always “knows a guy.” Entertaining, but not to be trusted. Science, on the other hand, is a little less dramatic and a lot more reliable. So next time someone tells you carbs are evil or that eating after dark will turn you into a pumpkin, just smile, nod, and pass the guacamole.
